Find out about our new 'Tech level' in IT
Bethany School is proud to be one of the first schools in the UK offering the new Tech level qualification in Information Technology, which was made available for Sixth Form pupils from September this year. Announced in 2016, this new qualification was introduced by the Government in response to the need for a more rigorous vocational course, equalling the A level in academic challenge but with the flexibility of a modular programme.
The course is endorsed by industry – a key part of its attraction for Bethany, with our commitment to offering a 21st Century curriculum which inspires individual excellence – and provides ideal preparation not only for higher education but for degree apprenticeships and those who may choose a pathway directly into employment.
The course includes the option to go into the workplace, giving real-world application and opening up a range of options not provided by the A level course. The programme is ideal for pupils who are interested in the wide range of careers within the IT sector, and Mr Hamilton, Bethany’s Head of Computer Science, is keen to reach out to industry experts, individuals and companies, and gain exposure for pupils to a wide range of IT sectors, such as understanding the nature of the IT provision in a major hospital, in a university or a school, or in a legal firm, for example.
For Mr Hamilton, the key advantage of the new course is its flexibility: “IT is such a fast-moving sector – what pupils learn now will be out of date in five years so it is vital that they gain the skills to adapt to these changes. We feel that the new Tech level offers an ideal balance of computing and digital skills that will ensure that pupils are well-equipped for the future”.
