Year 8 pupils take part in international tournament
This summer, Year 8 pupils, Paris Hobbs-Soteriou and Ethan Hill, travelled to Sweden as part of The Prep Schools’ Pumas B14 squad to compete in the Gothia World Youth Football Cup in Gothenburg.
This is the most prestigious youth football tournament in the world, with over 80 countries represented. Prep Schools’ Pumas represented England in the Opening Ceremony in front of over 52,000 people.
The boys travelled with the squad, staying for the duration of the tournament in a Swedish school where they were very well looked after by their manager, Oliver Burns, an FA Level 2 Coach, and Kris MacMahon, their fitness coach and therapist.
The squad qualified the group stage in second place after stealing a 4-1 victory against a formidable Lebanese team, Samaya FA, who finished top of the group.
In the knock out round they went on to play a Swedish team, Varnamo Sodra FF, and despite some outstanding game play and an admirable level of determination, the result did not go their way and the game finished 2-3 against them.
The manager summed up the performance of the team when he said he couldn’t have asked for more – their work rate was impressive right up until the end, and their team spirit was outstanding.
